This is a nice antique German Gritzner Durlach treadle sewing machine, thought to date from c1900. I would also like clarification on how to thread the top – I think I’ve done it correctly, however it’s not quite working and could be something to do with the thread already in the shuttle which could be a 100 years old. Can anyone give me any ideas on threading the shuttle. I’ve seen that some of them are worth some money, I really hope this one isn’t as I’d feel obliged to give it back and I’ve fallen in love with it. It’s a Gritzner Durlach with mother of pearl inlay. I’ve been on-line to see if I could find an instruction manual as it’s a shuttle one and I don’t know how to thread it. On Amanda Hi, I have been given a sewing machine from my Mother-in-Law as she has never used it and knows how much I love to make things. The machine is inlaid with mother-of-pearl and still has four additional throat plates, seven bobbins, nine foot attachments, and several replacement needles in a round wooden container from the Boyle Needle Company in Chicago, Looking forward to hearing from you. Can you tell me where I could find its serial number? I have several photos of the machine and its wooden case that I could send if that would be of any help. On Ellie I, too, have a Gritzner hand-crank sewing machine that my grandmother brought with her when she came to the US in 1909 aboard the Holland-America steamship “Potsdam.” The machine is still in excellent condition, but I am unable to find any identifying marks on it that would pinpoint its date of manufacture.
